The numbers cast by the starter mounting location should start with D2 for a 72. D=70's, E=80's, F=90's. At least that is how I have always identified them. I had a 71 and it was a D1. You can make it a stroker(block has to be machined for it). Roller is better because of less friction, but is not mandatory. You can make your block accept roller parts with a roller conversion kit, and the proper roller parts, (cam, lifters, pushrods, etc).
