I had the exact same problem a long time ago. Lemme guess, pumping the accelerator makes it work a bit when it's in the throes of stalling. For me, it turned out to be a dying fuel pump. I replaced and it was like a new car. I had always had a problem, so when I replaced the pump, the car suddenly felt like I unleashed an extra 50 ponies. I actually managed to extend the life of my old pump before it by removing it and reversing the leads and running it backwards, causing black gunk to fly out of the intake port. Then I reinstalled and the old pump worked ok for another few months.

Give it a try and go 1 step up on the volume rating of the pump.
