Also, most years the BCS has been in place (since 1998) it has been this close. The only difference is that usually it is a big debate over who is number 2, not number 1 like this year.
For example, when Nebraska played for the title a few years ago, they didn't even play in the Big 12 championship game, yet they were number 2 in the BCS and were sent to the national title game without even playing for the Big 12 title, let alone winning it. And, the year OK won it all, they lost the Big 12 title game I believe. And, one year FSU played for the title even though both them and Miami had one loss. Miami had beaten FSU in the regualr season, but FSU was sent to the title game.
