An EGT is a "exhust gas tempture guage". It reads how hot or warm the exhust is. Generally you want the exhust around 1,000 degrees even a little warmer if you're good with tuning. You take that reading at full throttle at the top of fourth gear. A safe limit would be in the 1,000-1,100 degrees F. Still look at your spark plugs to be safe. Some people even run hoter than that with good quaility parts. When I was running in the 12's I kept breaking T-5's as well. You can get either the "Z box T-5 trans, or a world class, or just end all the bull-sh*t and get the tremic trans. You mentioned its hard to get a trans down there, well try real hard on a strong piece so you dont have to do it any more.
Then after that you can smoke all those chevys and feel comfortable about your drive line.
Good luck and let me know how it ran with the 650 carb.!
