You can play with the pinion angle til the cows come home. Its not going to turn a tire fryer into an instant hooking machine.
If you have solid control arm bushings the pinion angle should be negative 1-2 degrees. If you are using rubber bushings it should be negative 3-4. Basically what happens is, during launch the rearend will want to rotate up. Setting the pinion angle negative will bring the pinion straight inline with the driveshaft during launch giving you the most efficient power transfer.
I have friends that run 9.70's in a 3300 lb stick car on a 26x10.5.
