Default 3 inch lugs for slicks??

Well now that I've been trailering my stang to the track for the past couple of years...the inspectors seem to be a bit more critical when checking out my car. They made me pull a lug nut off last time I was at the track...because the nuts I was using at the time were the long ones that cover the protruding stud. Anyway...they nailed me for not having longer studs since I run slicks. So I went and bought some 3in. Moroso lugs. How on earth do I get these things in there? I pulled my drum...banged all the old lugs out...and there is just no way these long studs will fit in there! Do I have to pull the axles?! Or go the cheese-ball route and drill a hole in the backing plate of the drum to fit the stud through? Or should I just cut a 1/2" off of the tip of the lug? Can I even cut these things? I have access to a killer band saw...but it still might be pretty sketchy. What have all you guys running slicks done?
