If the studs are .625" I would go 1/2" hole first and see where that puts you. You can always drill too small and sneak up on it, but if you drill too big the first time.........

I drilled mine to 1/2" and then used a reamer. My thoughts were using a tapered hole would make them tighter the further in the hole they were. I also used a big thick flat washer and an OLD lugnut in lieu of the BFH, but either way will work. With the BFH, it's too hard to keep the stud straight.
