Schooner, your battery ground goes to the engine block, the engine block is electrically isolated from the car chassis (sheet metal and frame) by the rubber motor mounts. Therefore you need to make sure the engine block is electrically connected to the rest of the car, and the best way to do that is to run a wire from the engine block to the firewall, the firewall being that big piece of sheetmetal that seperates the driver from the engine compartment. Like Phillyfanfrombirth said, make sure you use a good heavy guage wire, and also make sure you leave enough slack in that wire so the engine can move a little without jerking your wire loose. You should also scrape the paint or coating from the connection site, and use a star washer (they dig in a bit) so you end up with a good connection.
