I just recently had the same problem, and this is what i did:
I dropped the tank, and got rid of the pump in there. I connected a piece of 3/8" rubber fuel line where the pump was. (make sure it goes as far down as the part for the pump). I put the tank back up, put an in line filter in, bolted the pump right to the piece where your old fuel filter probably will be, and ran my line (i used a 3'8" rubber line) along the bottom of the car, right to the carb. Works great no problems. took all of about an hour and a half.
