I'd listen to Frank, above. The 1966 289 has a two piece seal. Not the one piece seal that is mentioned above. That was changed from a two piece to a one piece in the mid to late 80's on the 302.

Toss the rope seal and use the neoprene seal. Much easier to install and also seals better.
