Bigger is NOT always better. They actually lost power with a bigger carb. Lost power with a set of HUGE tube headers.

Are you sure it wasn't just that "Brand X" smallblock engine wearing out getting ready for it's next overhaul? You know they only go for 4 dyno pulls before the valve seals are shot and the piston slap kicks in.
