You neglected to give any information about your car: Year, model, engine & transmission type, just for starters. It sounds like you have an automatic transmission that is in need of major repairs. If you have no real automotive experience, this is something that you'll have to trust to a transmission shop.
It won't be cheap, and you may need a rebuild, so be prepared for that. Don't put off attending to this, or it will probably die on you, usually in the worst place and at the wrong time...guaranteed. Sorry.
