I had a cat go bad too so I gutted both of them. I just couldn't let that expensive Bassani X pipe go to waste.
Performance wise, it offered a noticeably quicker rev thru the gears and more top end power of course. The sound is awesome even with my stock mufflers. Overall though, I would rather have the cats on and functioning properly. The reduced emissions are my main reason. My car now has that familar off-road scent to it now that I'm not too crazy about. It's still cleaner than my 89LX was with offroads though for some reason.
I used to cherish the stealth appeal of my quiet car and now that is sort of gone. Around town, I'm not sneaking up on anybody anymore with my exhaust in the lower gears.
