Doesn't matter that the 5.0 doesn't pull like mad about 5300rpm. You just shift earlier.
BTW, I got my best mph shifting at 5800, 5600, and taking it through the end of the quarter in 3rd.
As far as having anything up top, my car even after standard Gtech reduction is running about 100mph through the traps with exhaust and a clogged K&N and 2.73's. My 3rd gear kicks *** too. I haven't run into an LT-1 that can out run me in 3rd yet. 4th is another story, though.
Here's my interpretation. He doesn't have any juice, you don't run 13.6's on the street, but he's obviously got mods. If he was gaining on you in 2nd for his car, then shifted to third he's already got the momentum, plus more hp, so when he finally goes by, it's gonna seem like he was accelerating faster in 3rd. I don't know why he had so many problems first run from a dead stop though, maybe he bogged or spun bad?
My personal belief, his rusty old 5.0 runs good, and you finally ran across a solid running, lightly modded 5.0. Like mine, although I doubt I'd beat you right now. The 5.0 generally won't really fall off hard till about 120.
