The only advice that i can give you is since you're going to work on your engine anyway, just take out the pistons and have them notched for valve clearance, so that way you don't really have to worry about it. I've heard that the clearances on those 86 engines are VERY close, so it would probably be worth the time and effort to notch them. I personally can't tell you how much clearance there is so i guess i'm not much help . Good luck!
