Tell that to the guys running 9's at NMRA races. They have a class built especially around the tires called Drag Radial. I think the Unlimited Products Racing (UPR) car even broke into the 8's using the 325/50R15. You do have to set the suspension and drivetrain up around the tires. It's alot of work but really surprises peaople when you rip off a 10 or 11 second pass on the same tires you drove it into the track with.
For your car try the 275/50R15 on a 8-10 inch wheel set at 15 psi. Do a good burn out and lower you launch speed a bit over slicks. It may take some practice.
