![]() Hello All,
I recently purchased a 1989 Mustang GT. It is all original and has 72,000 miles and is in excellent condition. My problem is a buzzing noise that I can hear soon after engine warms up. The sound is louder on the passenger side right behind the front tire. It can be heard only at idle. As soon as I raise the the RPM the noise goes away and comes back at idle. I was under the car tonight and nothing is rattleing or loose. I thought that it might be associated with the air pump system but I do not hear any noises comming from under the hood.... Any help would be greatly appreciated

![]() Is it more noticeable inside the car or outside? Does it do it when the car is stopped or only when moving, or both?

![]() Hello Dave 88,
It can be heard best on the outside of the car from the passenger side. But I can hear it while I am in the drivers seat. The noise does not alter with speed or RPM it is just stays the same. It does it when driving and sitting. I was trying to track it down last night and it just seemed to disapear after about 10 min. 5.0 Stang p.s. nice color choice on yours, mine is the same but with gray int.

![]() is there any more precise way to describe it other than a buzz? ticking, knocking, metal on metal, something ratting around, electronic type hisssss? It's gonna be real tough for anyone to be able to tell you exactly what it is without hearing it, unless they guess correctly. I'd suggest checking your headers for an air leak, especially around the flange where it bolts to the H-pipe.
You said that it comes when your car warms up. So it isn't there at all when the car's cold? Thanks for the compliments on the car. ![]() ![]() |

![]() Hello Dave 88,
The noise does not seem to alter with speed or rpm. The noise is pretty loud from outside the car but is still audible from the drivers side seat. It does it after the car has fully warmed up. and when it happens it will only be audible for about 5 to 10 min then it just seems to go away. 5.0 Stang p.s. Nice color choice on yours, mine is the same but with gray int.

![]() Yes,
It can only be heard after the car warms up. THe sound is really hard to describe. It,s not a clang or a mechanical noise but more of a eletronic noise, and not a hiss.....It is like a really loud fuel pump noise, but it does not come from the tank only from behind the passenger side wheel under the car. I thought that this may be a common problem since I was sitting in traffic next to another 5.0 and I heard the same noice comming from his car. I was in my truck..... 5.0 Stang

![]() Take a length of 3/8 rubber hose, hold one end to your ear and probe other end around engine compartment to find were noise is loudest. If noise goes away after 10 minutes I would not think its the exhaust. As metal will expand and seal it self. Hope you find it because I know any kind of in my stang will drive me up a wall, good luck.

![]() All fox bodied mustangs (Actually, most Fords of that year range) have very loud power steering pumps. Could this be it?

![]() Try checking all the connections from your smog pump back. Also check the brackets that hold the one way valves in place as they could be loose.

![]() OK heres what I "THINK" it might be. I removed the inner fender lining on my 88 a while back trying to lighten it up as much as possible. If you take it off. between the inner and outer fender right under where the radio antenna mounts to the fender there is a little canister of some type. I have no idea what it does or anything I just know its there. Seems like it had a couple vacuum lines and an electrical plug running to it. Maybe this will help.

![]() It could be your release bearing. Try pressing in your clutch and listen for the noise. Just a thought

![]() Hello All,
Thanks for all of the suggestions. My car is an automatic and I have replaced my power steering pump so I guess that knocks those suggestions out. I will check out all of your other suggestions in my quest for the dreaded BUZZING NOISE. If I find the cause I will be sure to let everyone know what the culprit is. In the meantime if anyone can think of anything else that could be causing the problem please put up a post. Thanks Again 5.0 Stang
