Post A/C Does not work well

Today it was about 85 out and I couldn't put the top down cause I had lots of stuff in the car (moving out of my college dorm). I had my A/C cranked up to full blast, and it does make a little difference, but not enough. I know you can get the Freon recharged, but is there a way I can tell if I need it? I have underdrive pulleys, are these making a difference and could I maybe get a smaller pulley for the a/c (so it spins faster). Has anyone out there upgraded their A/C?

Thanks!
Scott

I'm certified in a/c and refrigeration. And your problem sounds like plan and simple like your low on freon. A way to tell is sometimes theres a sight glass near the condensor and when the a/c is on you can watch that. If you see nothing but liquid, your good. But if you see bubbles, your low. Or place a thermom. in the vent and read the temp coming out. It should be around 55 deg. or lower. You can buy a recharge kit from most auto stores for pretty cheap. Just make sure its R12 refrigerent. Good luck.

Mike, how long ago were you a certified A/C technician? We non-certified A/C technicians can't buy R12 anymore.

I'm sure you're right that he's low, but he will have to take it to a station to get it charged. Another option would be to get a kit to convert it R134a. I did that and mine blows nice and cold. The cost of the refrigerant is also much, much lower.

It takes about 30 minutes at most. Very easy to do. Should cost you less than $50. You just need to put some new oil into the system and add some adapters that screw on over the old filling nipples.

The hardest part is that it is illegal to release FREON into the atmosphere. You need to take it to someone who does A/C to have them remove it all before you start. Mine was already empty when I did mine. You can always unhook your line to see if yours is empty, too. I'm sure it probably is.

Pep Boys is exactly where I got my kit.

That's funny I converted to the new stuff but after about 10 minutes of cold my air dies. The pressure readings are ok and my mechanick says I needed to keep the engine cooler for it to work. Got a black magig electric fa which did squat.

But gues what when it's cool it is ******* cold just not too cool when it's warm.

I got my R134a conversion kit from Wal Mart. $34.95.

My car blows cold *** air. I drove from here in Champlin, MN to Phoenix, AZ in August last year. When I was crossing New Mexico it was 120* air temp outside, I was crusin 90mph in 5th (about 2500rpm) and my A/C was set to normal, blower on medium. I had to turn it down, too fricken cold. LOL

To double check if your freon is low, just fire up the A/C, pop your hood and watch your compressor. Make sure it's set to maximum. If your compressor kicks in for a couple seconds, then kicks out for a few more, it's low.

Thanks, I got the kit from pepboys and the R134a. Cost under $50 and now the AC blows cold air. I would recomend this to anyone who's a/c doesn't work that well.
