Tranny rebuild

My 2nd gear syncro is bad you cant shift into 2nd gear when goin a certian speed or it grinds and thats the only gear it does this in now is it worth it just to get that replaced or should I do some preventive matinence and just get a full tranny rebuild, I have a 90gt with 138k with a stock T5 and king cobra clutch if that matters.

You could get it rebuilt fairly cheap if you know someone, I had mine done by a friend who's a Ford Trans Tech for next to nothing. It get's much more $$$ if you don't know someone. Figure a good price for a rebuild is going to be ~$400-$500 if your lucky.

Another option is buying a rebuilt T-5 for ~$800, a new T-5Z for ~$1000 or a new 3550 for ~$1500 with the bellhousing.

I went with a new T-5Z almost 3 years ago and have been kicking myself in the ***** ever since. I should have gone with the 3550.

I actually do have a hook up and could get a rebuild for under $500 and also whats wrong with the T-5Z?

It's still a T-5, and therefore does not like 6k launches on slicks

The 3550 can handle much more abuse.

if you do go with fixing yours and it is out of the car and all apart anyways, you might as well just have them do a complete rebuild. if you just get the syncros changed something else might go in a little while and then you'll have to do it all over again.

I did mine myself and it was the first time I had ever seen the inside of a manual transmission. I had a friend helping but he didn't know any more about it than I did. Got a rebuild kit from D&D performance for $159 and a manual for $20.
That was probably about 25,000 km's ago and it works great. I also don't drag race (yet) so if you are hard on tranny's you may want to look into something else

Where did you fnd a rebuild manual for the t5? Any one known anyone go to a richmond R.O.D. 6 speed on their 5.0? Just wondering

got the manual from D&D Performance too
I think Hanlon motorsports has them aswell

these are just two places off the top of my head, I'm sure you can get them from many other places too

Any thing in that manual useful? Just wondering cause I got the Ford dealer to copy the t5 schematic and torque specs along with the recommended clearences. Do you think I would need the manual?

it is pretty useful
has step by step instructions for teardown and reassembly
has numerous exploded views with every part labeled
has tips on what to look for when inspecting parts

you probably don't need the manual with the information you already have but if this is your first rebuild it might be useful.
For the price it might help you from making any mistakes and costing you more money
it is about 70 pages and covers world class and non-world class T-5 trasmissions

Thanks for the info, I dont know if Ill even bother rebuilding it. 3rd gear is gone and so is the cluster gear. Ive done a couple of autos but never a manual. Might be a good idea to have the rebuild manual around anyway. Thanks again
