Question 66 Stang rebuild

I am very close to purchasing my 1st '66 stang, and was hoping to get some information because it is a good project car. I was hoping for links, names of books, or personal advise on rebuilding it. It has a 289, manual tranny. There is something draining the battery when it doesn't run, owner isn't sure on what. The owner replaced the alternator, distributor and coil. It needs new quarters, and floor pans, along with some good amount of other body work. The 289 was rebuild 1,000 miles ago. I have plans for a 351W with a 5spd tranny to put in it down the road. Don't have either, but it's going to be a slow moving project. I was just hoping for some references to start reading up on. THANKS!!

Here are a couple good sites; vintage-mustang.com, fomoco.com, 69mustang.com, 4speedtoploaders.com, and try these keywords; mustang restoratio and FORD VIN decoders. I'm a classic stang freak! I am building a '69 Mach1 and a buddy of mine is building a '66 fastback restomod w/302 and t-5.

Thanks, I was a little scared I wasn't going to get any replies for a while. One thing this Mustang, which I am officially buying now, just waiting on the check... is FLOOR PANS, seems to be a typical problem with classic cars. I was hoping for some specific information on where, what kind of pans to get, and the best way to install them. These are rusted clear through all along the outer edge. Other information is also greatly appreciated. thanks again!

I get 90% of my parts through National Parts Depot. They carry American Designers brand floor pans and i have had very good luck with them. They are made well and the stamping is very crisp. I installed them using a sawzall (after the dirty work of removing the old stuff) and butt welded them in for a very clean look. Check out the Nov. '99 issue of Mustang Monthly.

My advice is to get a Ford shop manual after you get the car. They're available from most Mustang mail order parts houses I believe. I think mine was $35 a few years ago. For me it's been invaluable.
