Lightbulb Tossing around the idea of putting a 4.6 in my 6cyl 64 1/2!

My 6 cyl 64 1/2 (My first car)is in real SAD shape. The Shock towers are toast, the front passenger side frame extension is bent. The Trunk is a collection of fine antique rust. The Cruise O' Matic slips in all gears (Foward clutches probably toast) The 170 in pieces.

The BOdy is in great shape, and for some reason, so are the floor pans and Torque box.

I've been thinking of starting to collect parts to convert the old girl over to a Mod motor. Since everything needs redone and replaced anyway, I thought might as well do something alittle diffrent with it.

Just think what a 2001 4V or even the 260 horse 2V 4.6 would do in that light as hell car. I imagine it would rip along pretty good. The only problem I really see (other than cutting the shock towers out and replacing the whole front suspension) is the clearance of the tranny (T-45 or T-3560) and postion of the engine. Any one have any ideas or pointer?

Anyone know any internet sites I can get info from?

In response to your extremely creative wishes, you must take into account that a 4.6 is 4 inches wider that a 460cid motor. I know you have to do MAJOR renovation to get the 460 into the bay of that car I can't imagine what would have to be done for the 4.6. The advantage would be weight. Those 4.6's are pretty light aren't they? MY buddy ahs an all aluminum one in a cougar. Are thaey all that way. How much bugger is the t-45 than a t-5. Kits are available to put the t-5 behind a 351 in those cars I know for a fact. If it is n't much bigger I'd say it would fit. I know it takes some work with the persuader (a.k.a hammer) to do the t-5 swap. I say go for it. It would be something that noone else has. At least I've never seen one, and all I do is look at mustang stuff all day.

Well I know you have to remove the shock towers completely and change over the front suspension. As for weight, both motors, the 4V and 2V are heavier than the old 289 and 302's.

I was wandering about engine placement, drive shaft length is a ford 9 is used (Although they had diffrent length yokes), and brake issues.

I believe all the questions you have you will have to answer yourself. Sorry man. I dont know of any info about swap parts, sizes, placement, and such that exists. I would say to try to locate a junk motor and tranny for a while. Use the junk stuff to fit the car and see what mods you have to do from there. You could use them to find location and I would say you could get a junk block and tranny hull from any junk yard for a couple hundred bucks.

What about finding a wrecked lightning. You could maybe get everything you need and have that little whirrly bird on top as well. I would it would make for one H%$& of a ride.

I have seen this done in a Issue of mustang and fords. the magazine is mostly about classics. They had a 4v 281 in a 65 mustang. The thing looked awesome. Most of the stuff was fabracated though. U will have to do lots of work like that. Know there are lots of kits to put a FI 302 into it that has been done lots of times. If u want to be different though the 4.6 would be better.

That would be a really good project to do. Nobody that ive seen has done that, except a 80 yr old guy here. He put one in a roadster, it was neat as hell.Looked like a Hemi 429 from a distance with a custom (Hilborn style)intake. He said it got 24 miles to the gallon and cruised at 75 great.O to 60 in 4 and some change seconds. It really wouldnt be that bad to do. Cut out the inner fender and weld in some supports with a tubular cage from the firewall to the frame. Then a coil front end. The motor would be killer with a carb.Get a custon intake built. The ignition would be simple. It already is fired by crank trigger, add a msd trigger system. The mods look so cool wide, light, and next to nothing on the front. Water pump, alt short belted with electric fan. It would be the s**t!

Yeah, I saw the Metal Blue 65 convertabile that had the Cobra 4.6 in it in Mustang and Fords I believe. I know i have it around here somewhere.

Seen to many fuel injected 302's in first Gen Stangs, I thought about fuel injecting my 289, but decided not to.

I saw the Falcon I wanted to build in an recent issue of Mustang & FOrds, so scratch that (Although I'm still tossing that around).

I think with a 2001 Cobra 4V 4.6 in a light a$$ 64 1/2 hardtop should be able to run high 12's using 3:27's or lower ratio with a T-45.

The engine swap isnt the part worrying me, its the brakes and suspension part of it that is. Hmmmmmm Guess its time to go junk yard part pricing again.

Dont forget about our old friend OBDII. Do you want to deal with a OBDII fuel injected computer on a 64'?

Custom intake for a carb was mentioned.

The bottom line is how much money do you have? Anythings possible with the proper finances backing you.
