Angry Bad Axle Bearings

I took my car to a local performance shop to figure out what is making that grinding noise in the rear. They told me that it was not my differential as I previously thought, but instead my axle bearings! After looking in the manual, I think I have decided to take on this job myself. Have any of you done this before or have any pointers? Also, is this a common problem with late model Mustangs?
