Question Starting problems.......

My buddy has an '83 carbureted 5.0 w/ headers. The car has trouble cranking (slow) and melts the positive battery cable. Cables are tight. Connections on solenoid appear to be in check. Its not his first starter. This one is a cheap Advance A.P. reman. Could the starter be shorted out (cheap resin) ? Have any of you guys/gals used a Mean Green? I hear good things about them.
