Default Strength of 351's

I'm building a 408 and need a stock block, first what horsepower are these capable? Which years are the best? So far I've been told to find a pre 76 block. Is it hard to convert those old blocks to a roller block? ~Brian

71-74 are getting hard to find 69-70 are shorter.

as far as converting there are two ways small chevey stle cam and stock 5.0 spyder gear . or normal cam with roller lifters with bars.
'
I just saw some slotted roller lifters with a keyway and no bars for a chev so im trying to find if they make them for Ford yet.

hp depends on the prep. if its a concern get a sportsman block

my present on hits 700 but im thinking of lowering the torqu curve now.

The sportsman block isn't in the funds and I've heard the stock 351's are good up to ~750hp. Better than the 450hp 302's. ~Brian

I think that the sportsman block (the $800 one) is rated at about 600 HP by ford. How are you getting 750 from a stock block?

There was a splayed main Sportsman block out at the shop, what a nice looking engine! I believe the Sportsman 302 is rated at 700hp. The 351 is a lot stronger of a block than those 302's though. I'm definately going to get a girdle (Probe one, it's on the way) scaper, and windage tray. I'm also staying n/a. ~Brian
