Default Key copy?

I wanna get my key copied, can i take it to a hardware shop, and get it copied. I called the ford dealer.. and they said they have to make a special key.. any info off this?

youre key should have a chip in it....i believe you have to get it ordered for a mustang, then cut for your car...unless someone else knows, id go with ford....

It has an anti theft chip in it. If you cut one from the hardware store, it will open the doors, but if you try to start the car it will just turn over, without starting. I think the chip key costs almost $100

in a nutshell, you got 2 key's from ford?, they have to cut you one, with the chip, you have to take your 2 original key's, put the first one in turn your switch 3 times, i think, then the same with your second key, then with your new copy key so it program's it. im about 99% sure on this. good luck.

that proceedure is done step by step in your manual....he's right...but you still gotta buy the key....

if you have 2 original chipped keys now that work, you can just pick up a non programmed chip key from them and program it yourself with the procedure in the manual. if you only have one key now, then you have to take it in. Its for security purpose. that way someone would have to have both your keys(a valet parker for example) to program another new key.
