Unhappy Comeback needed!

Okay, it was Saturday night just getting back into Tallahassee with my 12 yr old daughter and 1 yr old puppy in tow. I'm a 38 yr old woman, trying to create an awesome ride that looks and sounds mean, but not really interested in going fast. It must be working because a car full of teenage guys pulls up beside me at the stop light and motion for me to roll down my window. So I did. They asked "Does that car really go fast?" I really didn't know what to say. Then they asked what is your top speed in it? Well truthfully it's been around 80 mph. Again, I'm at a loss for words and say something stupid. They light turns green and I floored it! Daughter starts freaking. lol. My husband had no advice for the correct comeback I should have given.
I was considering "Well the spedometer only registers up to 150 and my husband won't let me race anymore because we don't have room for anymore cars in the driveway." What do you think?

hummm. Well if you know your faster I prefer the simple

"Faster than you slick?"

or if you wanna race....

"I guess we'll find out "

Ok, I rather play with there heads...

Say something like...(like if you were really intrested in racing) "how much money you got" ....
and what ever they reply, (sound disappointed) and say "not enough"
and just take off or extra slow>
Good luck

You never think of a comeback in time so turn the tables and ask them how fast they go.

Whatever they say ask him if that's when he shifts into 3rd or doesn't it go any faster.

Keep them on their toes.

Oh, man! Sounds like a bunch of teens "Uh, how fast does it go?! What an ignorant question...

To those type of bold/prying/lame questions (esp if not from a fellow stanger), I'd answer with something like:

1) Is your car really fast? -- "Naah, it's really slow"
2) What does that car run at the dragstrip? -- "It runs 15s"
3) What's your top speed in it? -- 65

I'm not a bad guy, but ignorant or prying questions about my car from someone I've never seen b4 annoy me.

You should have looked..........laughed............let up the window.............and slowly drove off.

Thats all that would have been needed.

But when ppl. ask me if my car is fast..........I just reply w/

"Well, it gets the job done"

I think this is the best response. In my opinion, some of the other responses may make you sound like a prick, although the question "What is your top speed?" is pretty stupid too.

so you think slow is the best approach huh? I really must need to grow up. I thought peeling out would have been much more effective.

Cool

when my mustang was on the road and people asked me that question, i would tell them 60mph-in first gear.

I didn't say not too light up the tires from the light . I was just commenting on the verbal part of your response. I like to kind of get a "read" on the people next to me, then decide whether or not to roast the tires.

In your case, those teenage boys would have gotten a big kick out of seeing the Stang light 'em up. I still remember cruising around with a group of friends right after we turned 16 and seeing a fox-style Saleen. We told the guy to get on it and he spun the tires all the way through through the intersection. We thought that was the coolest thing ever and still talk about it . Plus, spinning a few tires may help some teenagers fall in love with a Mustang rather than a riced-out Civic.

Glad to hear I'm agreed w/

But I'm just not big on the whole burnout thing. One, it seems kinda overzealous IMO, wastes too much rubber for me , and seems kinda hickish :not a word, but it is now: to just do it to try to impress ppl.

I like to just ease into it, and let them hear my nice 1-chamber turndowns drown out anything they may be saying to me

I don't agree with burnouts in all situations. In fact, I rarely do them. But, if that car load of teens was similar to me and my friends at that age, they probably loved it. I don't do burnouts for no reason or just to show off, but in certain situations people enjoy seeing them.

Yeah, every once in a while I don't mind getting down on it a little if someone asks, to me that's different than "What is your top speed? LOL " In any case, like already mentioned, if I can influence some young kids towards a path of real muscle cars instead of those worthless rice rockets, then I'll do my best.

Yeah, I'd probably freeze up if anyone older or serious questioned me about my car, but a carload of teens was too funny! It made my day.
When I was in college my dad let me drive his 65 convetible chevy impala as my main ride. It had been totally restored and was cherry red. Back then I used to get asked out on dates at red lights. Oh, the good ole days....

In the movie The Gumball Rally the two women in the Porsche yelled " If you can catch me, you can have me!" and sped off.

Of course if you plan to use that one you need to get it out and see what it will do first just in case a chase starts!
