Default Motor Buildup

I am looking at building up a 302 block and possibly boring to a 306. I was wondering what kind of setup or options I have to go with to keep it N/A and get around 400hp at the flywheel? Also I just heard something today about opting to get my crank knife cut... Does this really help it out at all?

Getting the crank knife cut just makes it to where the crank slices through the oil so you get less drag from oil sticking to the crank.

I wouldnt spend my money on that unless I was building a high rpm engine.

You are going to need an excellent set of heads.

Canfields
AFR's
Edelbrocks
Trickflow

As well as a port matched intake like a holley systemax or trick flow R.

To achieve 400HP out of a 302 you are also going to need a custom ground cam .550+lift, Long tube headers. 70mm TB 24 or 30# injectors.

You will also need probably 11 to 1 compression to make that much HP out of a 302.

JMO,

JMO,
Can be done with less compression and less lift.
Just need the right parts.
Any power adders later????
This will also have an effect on N/A power.
Cam it for spray/boost and it will be a dog.
Cam it for N/A and will not really rerspond to any power adder later to good.
How much you want to spend???$$$
Bassani, Kook headers are just a few. (Long tubes is a must.)
2.5-3 inch exhust with an X-pipe and good flowing mufflers.
EFI or carb.
Efi will require the intake manifold to flow 15% more then the intake runner on the heads.
Heads need to flow in the 270 @ the lift of cam you choose, and have an intake runner size approx. in the 170-185 cc range.
Exhust needs to flow about 77% of the intake. Can be achieved by playing with the duration.
70-75 mm throttle body and VERY IMPORTANT...state of tune of engine!
With all this info you can now look for heads and intake that fit this criteria.
As goes for cam, I assume you still want a HYD. roller.
As goes for the compression..the more you have the easier it will be to make that power you want. Should be able to get what you want with the compression in the 10.25 to 1 area.
Cam... if off the shelf you want...a comp cam extreme energy would work. The 274 grind could do it.
And so on..I could keep going but, my fingers are starting to hurt.

Well I was thinking possibly of a power adder later on, but that would be a long time away. The $$ object is going to prolly be somewhere around $3-4k. I would like to keep the motor EFI, if at all possible. I know the biggest budget buster is going to be heads, but that is the most important part of the motor? Also what Kind of machine work am i going to be looking at? Also wonder what stock parts I can keep if I am going for that kind of power? Thanks alot for the time guys

Well the only machine work you'll need for a 306 will be a .030 overbore and re-honing. Then have the block washed to get all the metal shavings out. Are you going to be doing the assembly of the shortblock yourself then?

This is the website for my local auto machine/racing shop so you can get a general idea of what needs to be done and how much. Click on "Machine Shop" in the upper-right corner. Good luck and keep us informed.

My engine makes 495FWHP and I use a stock block and a stock crank. Its a 306 with Crower Sportsman rods, CP flat top pistons, .500 lift cam, TFS TW 58cc heads, untouched Air Gap intake, and 4150HP 650 carb.

You'll want to have the block decked and align honed as well as being bored.

Andy
