04 collectibility question

Hey I need some opinions here. I read there will be a shortage of 2004's. Ford says they'll run out this summer. What are your thoughts on buying an '04 for the collectibility angle?

Every time there is a model change people think the last year will be more collectible. I personally think you would have to hold on to the car for a looonngg time before it becomes collectible. To give you an idea, go to autotrader.com and look at the prices of the 93s and compare them to the prices 89-92 models.

Is a 93 collectible? Is a 98 collectible?

Sure they'll be worth something in 30 years, but not worth anymore than a 03 model.

It's funny that I saw this thread here just after I saw a truck full of brand-new '04 Mustangs heading south out of Detroit. I thought to myself, "there goes the last batch of Fox bodies."

The thing to remember and realize is that this fact would only appeal to Mustang phreaks like ourselves. Joe Sixpack couldn't care less, IMHO. The only thing he sees as a classic or collectible died off 30-some years ago (or more), represented by the 60's era Mustangs. However, I do see more people appreciating the early-80's Mustangs; you know, the 4 eyes?

I don't see the '04s becoming desireable collectibles any time soon. Until 2024 rolls around and you have one with maybe 10,000 miles on it, I wouldn't be too impressed.

One upshot I do see happening is the price of the '04s is going to PLUMMET as soon as the '05s start showing up on dealer lots. If I have enough $$$ over the summer and I can get a nice loan, hell I may pick up a GT for myself if the price is right.

The '05s are going to be HOT; there is no denying that fact.

The 04's will be collectible if the '05's SUCK. That and a lot of years to age as others have already pointed out. The best investment would be to wait for the 04's to drop in price big time if there are any left come Aug/Sep. They will not be able to sell these right next to the '05's.

I don't see the average '04 mustang being a collectable at any point. Maybe a Mach 1 with as much extra stuff as you can possibly get on it. Maybe a Saleen our Rousch. Having just gone to see a bunch of old Mustangs the Shelby's and Mach's are collectable but not just a staight mustang V6 or GT. There was a early 70's Mach 1 in really great shape there and the asking prices was only $28,000. Don't know what it cost in 1970 but probably not much more than $5000-$7000. So holding for 30 years gave you 5x your money not counting upkeep and insurance in the mean time or inflation. A good mutual fund would have done much better.
