Default hood doesn't fit?

I've got an 89lx coupe with a 351W, 3" cowl hood & it still doesn't fit.
I know the 351W is taller, than I have taller valve covers because my stock ones wouldn't fit with the roller rockers even though the trick flows are stepped. With the taller valve covers, I had to put in a 1" spacer so the upper intake wouldn't hit the valve covers. When I put the hood on, the cowl support which is the bulky stuff underneath the cowl hits the back of the intake. Can I shave it off? I need roughly a 1/2", or should I go with the 4" cowl. It also hits the inlet pipe where the cowl starts to curve upwards. Anybody run into this problem? I need some help, the car is waiting in the body shop right now. thanks
