![]() Hello there everyone.
Its been like 3 or more months since I last posted. Been very busy. Finally got my old Stang, the one with a 289, running again, and after driving it around all weekend, I've decided I want to put a 5 spd in it. Its got a C4 now. I've never done a conversion before, and have to keep it on a budget. While changing to a T5, I would like to put a nine inch, or 8.8 under the car also. Any Ideas on what other Ford car would have a 9 or 8.8 that would bolt up with no major modifications? I'm not to sure. Have any of you out there ever put a manaul tranny in an origianlly auto car? And advice would be appreciated. Thanks much. ------------------ 64 1/2 Red Mustang Coupe. 289, C4, 3:1 rear gear. Mallory duel point. And to many others to list 2000 Perf Red Mustang GT. 5spd. 64 1/2 red 6cyl coupe. Auto. project car. |

![]() From what I have heard and read, putting an 8.8 into an early car is not an easy undertaking - I'll look around for some info on this swap.

![]() I'm with these guys, I wonder why you feel you need to dump the 8" rear. The only reason to need the 9" is for severe use. I've put several 8" rears through years of hard street use without any failures. Sure the 9" is much stronger, and gear selection is a lot better, but do you need those things? You can buy a set of new 3.55 or 3.80 gears and a TSD unit for the 8".

![]() I know the 8 inch is a strong diff. but I was weighing the cost of rebuilding my 8 in and putting gears and a spool in it, versus trying to find a locking 9 in. Honestly, its been a while since I priced anything for my old Mustangs.
I want to find a T5 from a junkyard, and rebuild it if need be, but I cant find any at all around here. Does anyone have a basic idea of the cost of converting and auto first Gen Mustang to a T5 5 speed? I know the drive shaft will need shortened and of course the cost of the T5, if I ever find one, and the cost of the clutch and components, but the specialty parts, I'm not sure about the cost, anyone have any ideas? Please tell me, the cost is important, if its to much I'll just put my money towards the 2000 GT. ------------------ 64 1/2 Red Mustang Coupe. 289, C4, 3:1 rear gear. Mallory duel point. ![]() I did the T-5 swap in my 69 mustang and fortunately I found a tranny, bellhousing, and flywheel for 1000.00 I checked, and to buy the t-5 bell housing and 50oz. flywheel from ford was a little over 400.00 Then some conversion parts and cross memeber from www.windsorfox.com were about 200.00. You will definitley need another flywheel and make sure it matches your harmonic balancer weight. I think the older mustangs had 28oz and the newer ones with t-5s have 50oz.(don't hold me to that though it's been a while since I did all that research) Good luck

![]() Mine was about around a $1000 bill. I bought a used T5 and bellhousing for about 700, and then you need the new crossmember and shorten your driveshaft.
the original flywheel and pressure plate can be used, but the bellhousing must be modified to use the old style clutch fork and throw out bearing. You have to attach an old styly clutch fork pivot to it. Or you can convert to a cable clutch, but that will cost you a few extra bucks. ------------------ 66 GT Fastback, fuel injected 5.0, 5-speed, cable clutch, JBA's and duals, 3.40 gears and handling mods...just call me "Doc" |

![]() That's right! I went to a new style block. I guess that's why I had to get a different flywheel.
