28 vs 31 spline aftermarket axles?
Anyone break an aftermarket 28 spline axle? I know the 31 splines are 35% stronger supposedly, but I wonder how necessary they are if you're NOT launching @ 6000 with 28 inch slicks every weekend. (If go 31 then I have to change diff. plus axles which of course have to be 5 lug, so then I need new wheels blah blah blah).

why do they have to be 5 lug? I have 4 lug 31 spline axles.
If your ugrading anything in the rear, do it right the first time and then you wont have to worry about it ever again hopefully. Why are you even asking this question? are you changing diffs. or something? ------------------ 1993 GT/AOD '93 Mustang GT |

yeah, I want to change diffs..from a lock-rite powertrax to something more streetable, and axles are no big deal, but 5 lug is the way to go, so that means wheels+tires and it all adds up to ALOT of $. Especially when you don't buy crap. (of course i'd want to run the sn94 spindles and rotors+tubular control arms) and it goes on and on. Oh yeah, I'm supposed to be able to DRIVE the thing too!

why is 5 lug the way to go? 4 lug is strong enough, and there are plenty of wheels available.
you can justify anything you want in your own mind. Do you really need 31 spline axles? No, you dont. Would it be a nice upgrade to improve the reliability of your car for future mods and a good time to do it since you are buying a new diff. anyway? Yes, for sure. I did mine with an Auburn Pro, 4.10s and 31 spline moser axles with the 4 lug, retaining my 4 lug wheels, which will work just as well as any 5 lug set up. How much do you want to spend? How fast do you want to go? Thats the bottom line, plain and simple. Its a judgement call on the axles. |

I have the Moser 28-spline axles and they are excellent for a street car that doesn't use slicks or have huge-RPM launch capability.
They come in 4-lug (what I have) and cost about $225, per set. Better than stock but not overkill. Recommended. |
