2001 1/2 and 2002 Stang Tranny
The Tremec TR-3650 is a slight different from the T-5 so I did some digging. I am not sure which one applies but here they are.

Actually, I think the use of the T-45 started in the 96 model run. I'm pretty sure that the T-5s went away with the push-rod motor...
The 3650 came around sometime after 99, not sure when...

According to the chart I found, the 3650 can handle 360 ft-lbs of torque while the T-5 can handle 300 ft-lbs. I will do some checking on the T45 and report back...

Looks like the T45 can handle 325 ft-lbs.

No, Tremec only started in the second half of 01... build date of March 01 would get you a Tremec.
Proof is in the pudding. I used to have a 2000GT. Bought a B&M shifter kit for it. The shifter can not be used in my 2002GT because it is not the same tranny. Now with that said with about 10000 miles my 3 gear syncro went on my 2002, so I just got a new Tremec tranny in my car. It seems they are bullit proof but not Lizard proof.

Well, with this said my 00 GT built in June of 2000 has "TREMEC" stamped all over the tranny. Beside the shifter and the bottom. But since Ford didn't put them in a Mustang until 2002, we must not know how to read, right???

The only thing I can see is they had shortage of trannies and sent a couple of SVT trannies to build your car. Dead serious, second half of 2001 production only got Tremec.
Does your tranny "whine" in first gear - a bit like if you had it in reverse? Seb

99 = T-5
00 = T-5 01 to 01.5 = T-5 01.5 to now = Tremec

I don't think the modular mustangs ever used the T-5...
All of the sources I've seen have it going straight from T-45 to 3650. Although in later years, the T-45 was Borg-Warner designed but Tremec-sourced.... Maybe because the original T-45's didn't hold up very often.

I'll be completely honest with you.
T-5 or T-45 I don't even know the difference. I know they went to a Tremec in 2001.5 (MARCH). The Tremec feels a bit smother and tighter when new, and "whines" in first gear.

I have a Steeda Tri-Ax for my tranny - 02 GT
According to Steeda, the tranny is 3650 after Mid 01. Before that, I could not tell you. I thought it was a T-5 but I could be wrong. I can make a phone call to Steeda to see if they know for SURE. |

Re: 2001 1/2 and 2002 Stang Tranny
ok guys, i was getting frustrated reading all this so let me set it straight......borg warner built the t-5 tranny until the arrival of the t-45 in 1996(also borg warner). In 1999 the company TREMEC began making the T-45 TRANSMISSIONS different company, same thing...... the tr-3650 came sometime during the mid 2001 production, also made by tremec. hope that helps. also, the newer 3650s used a larger clutch.

Re: 2001 1/2 and 2002 Stang Tranny
The T-45 was used starting with the modular engine program. In
mid 2000 model year the t-45 was phased out for the stronger t-3650 model both of which are made by tremec. The t-45 is marginally stronger than a t-5 while the t-3650 is a fairly stout piece for a factory transmission it even comes with internal shifter stops to prevent bent shift forks that were so common with t-5's and t-45's |

Oh good grief,
Tremec purchased the rights to the Borg Warner T-5 and T-56 several years ago, which is why the T-5, T-56, and 3650 would all have "Tremec" on them. The T-5 was used in Mustangs from 1983-1995. The T-45 started to be used in 1996, and the Cobra's got the 3650 starting in 1999. The 3650 wasn't offered in the GT until mid 2001 when the upgraded Cobra tranny became standard issue for the GT as well. The T-45 ran in the Cobra from 1996-1998, and the GT from 1996-2001. Regardless of what the ratings are, I'd take a T-5 over a T-45 any day. No T-5 was ever installed into a mod engined Mustang from the factory. |

Mr. Lizard, if you goto Tremec's web site it seems they make the T-45 and a number of other transmissions. The transmissions pre 2002 could be or are "Tremec" made transmission just maybe not the 3650 that you are referring to.
I will crawl under mine and try to get some sort of #'s off of it to see which "Tremec" model it is. |

Hehe...
Thanks for the straight dope Unit. Although I knew the modulars never used a T-5, I never realized that the Cobras got the 3650s ahead of the GTs. Did you actually come out of your cave just for this?
