Got beat by a Supra!!!
I was cruising down the road yesterday and saw some kind of import sports car coming up from behind. I could not tell what kind it was. My first thought was "so you want some of this?". He nodded as he passed and proceeded towards the red light were he waited. When the light turned green, he eased forward and waited for me to arrive. It was at that time that I noticed he was driving a late model ('97??) Supra Turbo. I was in third gear at about 2200 RPM. When I caught up with him he jumped on it. I mashed the gas without downshifting (mistake) as I watched him creap ahead of me. Even as my RPMs got up around 4-5k, he was still pulling away!!! This really surprised me. It bothered me all day until I got home and pulled out a Car and Driver mag and found that his car in stock form runs the 1/4 mile in 13.6! 0-60 MPH in 5.6! I really had no idea those things were so fast. He probably had his revs right where he wanted them just waiting to jump. But no excuses - he beat me. So those of you with unmodified or slightly modified Cobras, be careful with those Supra Turbos!!

Yeah, I have some plans. A high-flow H-pipe and a cold air intake are coming soon. That alone may be enough.

Yeah, those mods with a decent driver (I assume you know your car by now) will do it. The best part is that you can get everything for this at around $650. Even cheaper if you go used, which is what I suggest. I got my X pipe in today. Hopefully it will be on by Saturday night.

I am looking for an H-pipe w/cats. I would like to sell my off-road BBK pipe first. Do you know anyone who may be interested?

hey, you can never "forget" those Supra's. These things are more dangerous then the new C5 Vettes. Remember, Twin Turbo.... Dial up the boost and hello 12's. These things have a very strong built engine, so they can take the added boost. A few mods (intake, exhaust, ECU) and these are almost untouchable). It is not rare to see these seemingly stock looking cars running 11's. I'd rather be at a light next to a Porshe 911 then a Supra. You just never know what power they are packing.

11's with minor mods? That seems outrageous. What are the specs on these things? Including price.

Here are some specs;
Supra Turbo: The performance leader comes with intercooled sequential twin turbochargers that help the 3.0-liter twin-cam 24-valve EFI in-line 6-cylinder engine produce 320 hp @ 5,600 rpm. It's available with either a 6-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic. I've been a victim so be wary of your prey. Twin and single turboed Supra can run straight fast and hard. Usually a little difficult to launch but once the turbos are spooled. Look out. 11s and 12s are very easy while retaining streetablility'. These are the imports you should look out for. ------------------ SMOKE Personalized Black 98 SVO Blown ROUSH without the side exhaust [This message has been edited by SMOKE (edited 10-20-2000).] |

As far as price, I think they sold for around $50,000 new. And they are fairly rare. Why did they quick selling those mean machines in the US anyway?

New I think the Supras were in the mid 40s. They costed (is that a word?) about the same as a Vette. And they can be very mean. They come with all forged internals in a very strong block.
With a few fairly simple modications: boost/fuel controller, down pipes, and a clutch, they can easily make over 400 hp. It gets worse when the twin turbo is swapped out for one larger one. They went away because they didn't sell very well. Most people who can slap 40 some Gs down for a sports car don't like the shopping cart handle/fart pipe look, so the Vette was a better choice. The Lexus GS300 uses the NA version of that engine (220 hp) and there are rumors that Toyota might bring back the TT in a Lexus Supra. |
