1st run at track!
Had my first run down a track Saturday, what a rush! Best run 14.49, 97mph, reaction .5663. I got 5 runs in, launching is tricky. I was so nervous on the first run I forgot to turn my traction control off! ( it actually ended up being my 2nd best run of the day) There was a 9 sec monster with no mufflers and primer for paint doing massive burnouts next to me. By the end of the day I got the hang of it and can't wait to go back. I already ordered more mods-Steeda underdrives and timing adjuster. I am also considering getting some drag radials. I bet that with just the drag tires I may be able to get into the high 13's-I was spinning tires the whole day.

Did you go to River City?
I might be more inclined to go myself if I knew other newbies were there. Blue |

If you work on your launch, you should be able to hit high 13s easily with those 4.10s even on street tires. My 00 is definitely a handful to try to launch even with the stock 3.27s - burns out if you rev it too much, bogs if you don't rev it enough. What were your 60ft times?

Blue00GT: My 60 ft times averaged 2.1-2.3, I had 5 runs to experiment but the 60 ft times stayed level with several launch methods. I didn't try slipping the clutch, some people suggest that.I noticed some of the really fast cars 10sec, etc., seem to kind of lurch out of the box then nail it-I tried that too but I think I'll have to do it a few more times to get better. Everyone says I should get drag arms and drag radials so supposedly I can lauch at 6 grand and hook up. I also noticed in watching a video that I smoke the tires pretty good shifting into 2nd possibly losing time. I might try shifting at a lower rpm (I was powershifting at 6k). It's mind boggling how hard it is to make up 1/2 sec! Anyway, I'm hoping that my Steeda pulleys and timing adjuster might help make up a little for my sloppy launches. Maybe I'll just run over the guy that sprays water all over the track, I dont think water helps street tires.

Traction is all you need, slap on some Nitto or BFG DR's and you'll knock your times down. No more 2nd gear spinning. On street tires you can shift a little lower into 2nd to keep from spinning but it will hurt your et depending on how low you shift. My best times have come from me shifting 1-2 at 5700 - 5800RPM's, 2-3 and 3-4 at 6000RPM's.
As for launching just leave around 2000 RPM's slipping the clutch. |

From what I've heard, for every tenth you gain off the line, you can subtract about another tenth at the finish line, so if you can get your 60ft below 2.0 and not burn out too much on the 1-2 shift, you should hit high 13s.
It looks like the gears are actually hurting your time with the wheelspin, because on a run where I bogged on the launch with a 2.2 60-ft time, I ran a 14.3 bone stock. After reading your earlier posts, I had decided to get 4.10s also, but I tend to get a little excited off the line too, so now I'm not so sure again. I don't think even the 315s in the back would stop the wheelspin altogether because with the 3.27s it occasionally burns out on the launch when I don't mean to if I stab it to quick. ------------------ 2000GT Atlantic Blue: Cobra R Wheels-17x9 255/40/17, 17x10.5 315/35/17, tubular K-member & control arms, Tokico 5-ways, coil overs, sway bars, strut/shock tower bars, 70mm FMS throttle body, Saleen nose. 79 Pace Car: Maximum Motorsports suspension - H&R Race springs, Bilsteins, rear control arms, chassis bracing, Draglites, 302 w/ Edelbrock Performer intake, cam and 600cfm carb, BBK equal-lengths & H-pipe, 2.5" Flowmaster 2chmbr exhaust, Al Driveshaft, 8.8 trak-loc, TCI C4 w/ 2000 stall, B&M |

All you need to do is go the track and practice. I know at first you get those jitters running at the track but after you've done it a few times it's no big deal, then you concentrate on driving. I've seen people that can launch car's on street tires and 400RWHP and not spin. It's all in how you drive it. I could never do that I'd end up putting the car in the wall with street tires.
Right now I'm running 265/50/15 futuras and I can't traction if I wanted to. The car will chirp 4th fairly easy. |

My very first time was a few weeks ago, and I felt like a kid again! My car is an auto, but I still did really well...got into the 13s twice! What whopping great fun!
Ok, so with an auto, launching is a no-brainer. I don't see how you guys do it with manuals. How on earth do you rev the car, hold in the clutch, AND keep the car from creeping forward? I've driven manuals for many years, but I think I would totally stink at drag racing one. I'm going again June 9. ------------------ "Back in the day" owned a '66 289 and later a black '68 289.
