I'd have to say a 4" piece of wire with 1/4" blade plugs and the check engine light are the best. Thats the only way I've ever done it.

there are two types of readers... well maybe there are more.. but I know of two... there's the kind with little LEDs and BEEPS and there's the nice ones with LCD displays..

the led ones will flash out the codes, kinda like morse code and beep ... you then have to look up in a book what the codes are and then you're set... these are like 30 bucks at walmart or most parts stores..

then you've got the fancy ones that have LCD displays that display the codes for ya... some of the GOOD ones will have adapers for different manufacturers too... but those can be well past 100 bucks..

i was talking to pkrwud about it and i think i am going to look in to getting OTC Mindreader, this thing reads about every make of car and i am sure that will help out in the future. How is that done with the wire again. I dont even think i have a check engine light. My car is a 87 with a 89 computer in it as well as swaped over to mass air now
thanks

if you DONT have a check engine light you can do it with a VOLT meter... though I dunno how it works if you converted to mass air... I'll assume it's the same... here's the picture on how to set it up
