Default 3 Speed to 4 speed?

I am thinking about changing my 3 speed, 64 1/2, 170cid to a four speed. Can it be done or should I leave it alone?

how many bolts hold on your transmission?? Im thinking that it may have changed from early 65 to later model years..... The input shafts should be the same, right now im running a 3spd from a 6cly behind my 302.

Not to pick on your car, but why spend the money on a 4 speed change on a 6 cyl. car?? I don't see where your advantage would be, unless you just want a 4 speed, which I understand fully.

Now is you were going to install a V-8....then a 4 speed would be advantages to get the power to the ground.

Take care

I am not really interested in changing to a V8. I kind of like the 170 cid. I just want to close the gear ratios a little. It is a big jump from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd is real close. I will leave it alone if it is not really worth the work.
I do prefer a 4speed.

Thanks for everyone's insight.

I'd prefer a 4 speed too... but I'm not sure it is worth the work nor money...

if you souped up the old 6 it could definately be worth it. check out www.cliffordperformance.com and http://www.mustangandfords.com/techa...283/index.html You're going to spend more money on performance parts for the six, but may save money on not having to swap out all the stuff associated with the 6 to 8 swap. You will have to swap the rear end though, i broke mine when i still had my 6cly in!!
