96 Gt/cobra Conversion
To all mustang tunners:
I am in the process of converting my 96 automatic GT to a COBRA powered ride. My car has the following aftermarket modifications: * 125 Wet Nitrous Shot * MSD DIS 4 Ignition * STEEDA Pulleys * STEEDA Timing Adjuster * 80 MM Vortech Mass Air * 30 # FORD MOTORSPORTS Injectors * 70 MM FRRP Throtle Body * 255 lph MAC In Tank Pump * SOUTHSIDE LOWERS * METCO DOUBLE ADJUSTABLE UPPERS * LEVEL 10 TRANSMISSION SHIFT KIT My car has run a best of 12.85 at 105 MPH. I already have the 96 COBRA motor with all the harness and computer and S TRIM VORTECH supercharger it came from a T45 powered car. I would appreciate all the info on how to couple it to my automatic tranny since Im planning to upgrade it with all the latest aftermarket parts for this tranny. Do I need any especial bellhousing or it could be coupled directly to my transmission? Will the COBRA computer run the AODE? Have anyone do this conversion and how it came out on the pits?

Okay. I'm not an expert on the modular cars, but let's see what I can do since you asked.
The Lincoln Mark VIII came with the AOD-E transmission during it's production run from 1993-1998. During that time it was equipped with the 4.6L DOHC 32V engine, almost exactly the same as the Cobra's. I really doubt there are any differences between the Mark VIII block and the Cobra block, and I would be suprised if all the 4.6's didn't use the same bolt pattern on the transmissions. If you were in a pinch for a computer, the Mark VIII computer should run the AOD-E, but I don't know if the Cobra's will since the Cobra was never offered with an auto tranny. Basically, it doesn't seem like a real complicated swap to me on the surface. You shouldn't have to do any engine compartment mods, I would assume the tranny will bolt up fine, and you should have access to auto computers for the DOHC 4.6L from the Mark VIII. As far as your other mods, I don't know how the rest of your systems will interact with the Cobra parts. If I had more knowledge about the newer engines, I'd certainly share it. Good luck, Kell |

I think you'll find not too many people express their knowledge on modulars because they really don't have any.
I have very little in comparison to the 5.0. The modular information is out there, it's just hard to find and very scattered. Wish the best for your project. |
