1996 Cobra vs 1988 GTA
Can you guess what road I was on?
Yes its Hwy 80. Two of my friends that I was with said they were hungry. Since it was 11:00 at night the only thing close was a gas station or Walmart. So I said which way? Left or Right? They said they didn’t care. I saw what looked like two 3rd generation Camaros drive by going towards Walmart. “Walmart it is.” At the light that intersects Airport Rd, they were stopped one in front of the other. I pull up to the one in front of me and see it is a 3rd generation Camaro, but only a six cylinder. I didn’t hope much for the second car to be any better. The traffic in the right lane was going slower than us, so I was able to change lanes and see what the other car was. We see the taillights. “What the **** is that?” my friend asks. Looks like a Firebird. “What does GTA mean?” one of my friends asks as we pull beside it. The other passenger says hit it. Going at 60 MPH, I drop into third and pull away. I stop at somewhere around 6500 on the Tach. I don’t see him do anything. Ah well, guess they weren’t fast. I figured maybe it was Pontiac’s first version of the Firehawk. Then I see the car catching up to me. I pass the 45 MPH speed limit sign, so I slow down. I press the clutch and put it in second, waiting for him to try and take me. Hah, the only Camaro/Firebird from the early nineties that could take me was a Firehawk. So I let him get closer, he revs it. Sounds a little big, but that was probably just a nice exhaust setup, so I paid it no mind. I let of the clutch and jumped on the gas. I got a little wheel spin (still haven’t perfected that) and I don’t see him beside me, from the corner of my eye. “Hah hah, Gm kill.” Then I hear my friend say “Goddamn”, I say “What?” I look over as I shift into third and the Firebird is sitting beside me. He waits until 100 MPH to give it his all. From 100–120 MPH he was able to get 1 and ½ car lengths on me. “Jesus Christ!!!” I yell. “My friend looks over and says, “You should have gone for second.” I did. “Jesus” It looked like I didn’t try this guy beat me so bad. So I get next to him at the next light and roll down the passenger window and ask, “What have you done to your car?” “A tune up.” My jaw just dropped, no ******* way a stock GTA could beat me. Then he says “Just kidding, I got a modified 383 stroker.” I wasn’t able to ask what he meant by modified because he took off and I didn’t even try. I was way out of my league. The guy had at least a cam, because at the light it had a real uneven idle. It was nice. Looks like another score for the GM boys in Jackson, every GM I race seems to be modified, makes me wish I had a job to get a Vortech. Well time to start looking for another job and another race. |
