2" filter element for a 302 CI is pretty thin to me. I think you need 3-4" for a performance engine so as not to restrict air into the engine. Use modeling clay to check hood clearances if it's tight under the hood.
I use a 3" K&N in a home made cold air induction unit with an Edelbrock Performer, with my stock hood . The home made thing touches the hood sometimes and "moves" on it as I nail the throttle. Rev
