You made the mistake of using a "used" steering box. Generally, one can measure the amount of play by simply moving the steering shaft and watching the pitman shaft. If the steering shaft moves but the pitman doesn't the box is worn. Some wear can be compensated by adjusting the box using shop manual procedures. There are two adjustments: bearing preload and sector clearance. The box must be out to adjust bearing preload since the adjuster is located around the steering shaft. The idea is to take the play out of the bearings then and only then to adjust the sector clearance. For most 35 year old reciprocating ball steering boxes this is a waste of time. The bearings need to be replaced and usually the sector gear needs replacing. The easiest way is to pay the $419 for a new Flaming River box for your '67. You'll be glad you did.
