Default hissing noise

when i start my car for the first time of the day i can hear a hissing noise comming from what seems like the passenger side of the engine. it started to do this about a year ago but wasn't that bad. it would do it but then stop. now it does it and eventually stops, but not for a while after the car is warmed up. its not a constant noise, but it is there when i am gradually bringing the revs up before shifting. and if i keep the rpms around 2000 or so it is a constant hiss. does anyone have any idea what this could be? if you do, please tell me its driving me out of my mind. thanks.
