Just a thought, but if you have to change engines, swap a 302 in there. Everything will swap over including the heads, so you will not be out very much money on the swap. I say this because you can always put the 289 on a stand for a later time when money is not as big of a problem. A 302 should be fairly simple to come buy with little money to spend, especially when compared to a 289. If you are worried about shows, very few people can pick up on the fact that I have a 302 short block in mine, with 289 front dress.
Make sure and look into the 289 before decidng it is dead though. Ryan
