My father has a '79 f-250 that he built

it has a 460 and a C6 and the other day he cooked the tranny. By the time he noticed it was getting hot and looked at his autometer guage the thing was wrapped around the top. so anyway, my question is what does the heat actually fry in automatics. My father is thinking just the bands are slipping but I don't really know much about them. And does anyone have any good information on rebuilding a C6 or a site that sells rebuild kits. thanks guys this is the first time I've visited the classic mustangs section, it's pretty nice in here Conrad
