Ok, here's my .02(again) A buddy of mine the same funked up problem. He had a 1987 4 banger escort with about 130k on it. He started having the same problem, except his car would not only stall, or start, but would EAT wheel bearings like fudge brownies!! Turned out to be the engine and chassis ground. Check it now!!!
