I believe that you are correct, in that ANY strut (as long as coil fits) may be used.

Some struts have more sideload capability (better/stronger), and may even have a bigger diameter rod, and may cost more to manufacture. But a strut is a strut.

Personally, I have tried KYB's and thought they sucked, for many reasons.
