Maybe it's just me but I don't think the motor should knock at low rpm under load. Not that I think it has anything to do with your oil consumption problem just pointing that out. It's a possiblity that you're sucking oil thru the intake from somewhere else. I'm assuming that you're running a carb set up. Which I don't know a whole lot about since I've been dealing with EFI much more than carb. But you might check your PCV valve and other things along that line.
