Default 4 lug rear end

I am learning a lot fast since purchasing a 1986 GT with 5 speed. Why do some of these cars have 4 lug, and some have 5 lug. I thought 4 lug was only with 4 cylinder cars, but obviously not! What is the difference between the 5.0 LX and 5.0 GT? I guess this is where the differences really come in. Thanks for all input. Steve
