I feel that even with mods(converter, gears, shift kit, etc...), the AOD sucks up too much horsepower to be competitive with the 5 speeds, and this has been my personal experience as well. With mild to moderate engine mods, the 5 speed should beat the AOD every time, modded AOD or not.
They say the AOD sucks up around 30 horsepower, tough to make up for with converter, shift kit, etc... If your goal is to hang with or beat 5 speeds, without spending a lot of money, I would recommend doing the swap as you suggested. Just get a tremec for a hundred or so more dollars, and forget the T-5. |
