I'm surprised no one has mentioned Quake II or III.
There is a free DDAY version for the Quake II engine. That is a cool game. You can be a medic, sniper, officer, heavy machine gunner, etc. It is a point and shoot game for the most part. A lot of fun on Gamespy. You can pick up Quake II for $10 new. The upgrade is free on the net. I would suggest a cable or dsl modem with any multi-player game.
