You don't have to spend the money for calipers unles you want to. Instead, you can spend $5 for a "machinists scale" which is basically a ruler with calibrations in tenths of an inch. If the clearance is tighter than 0.100, then you could buy the caliper to check. Just tryin to help you save some $.
